Al Pacino in Scarface

Wes Anderson advises what to watch in quarantine, lectures on cinema and David Lynch mysteries – we tell you what interesting things happened in the industry in a week.

David Lynch became a blogger

Near-cinema news from industry master David Lynch: the cult director has started a YouTube channel called David Lynch Theater and has already published several videos. No, they are not about movies or owls from Twin Peaks, but about … the weather in Los Angeles: the director, sitting in his office, looks out the window and describes what he sees. For example, the weather report from the May 14 video looks like this: "Beautiful blue sky, a few clouds, but the sun is peeking out, and 16 degrees warm."

In the comments, someone has already joked that this is "the first David Lynch movie that I understood."

Why the weather? Perhaps because 10 years ago, the author of Mulholland Drive already addressed this topic – then he posted videos with "weather forecasts" on his website, they were all just as short and mysterious: either a balloon instead of a face, or an inverted flower pot with a question mark in the frame.

Fans did not understand what the action was, but noticed that the office is similar to the one that was in the FBI Director Gordon Cole in the TV series "Twin Peaks", played by Lynch, and the same phrase is often heard – "muffled golden sun.

One thing is clear: all this is not what it seems.

Lectures on architecture in cinema

If you are sitting at home due to quarantine and you still have the strength to learn something online, then here is an offer from the Moskino cinema chain: free online lectures from the Architecture and Cinema cycle, which will be held by an architectural historian and the founder of the project " Moscow through the eyes of an engineer" Airat Bagautdinov.

They will tell and show how the buildings and appearance of the city as a whole affect the plot, characters and film language – using the example of a variety of films: from Aelita and The Irony of Fate to Ghostbusters and The Truman Show.

There are four lectures in total in the cycle – the first two have already passed, but the recordings are posted on Facebook (look for the schedule on the project website).

It is better to watch films in advance, so that it is easier to perceive the material, but you will not get bored even without preparation – the lecturer tells so fascinatingly. We heartily recommend Airat Bagautdinov’s YouTube channel with many lectures and his podcasts on Mayak radio to everyone interested in architecture.

‘Call Me By Your Name’ director to direct ‘Scarface’ remake

Italian director Luca Guadagnino, best known for Call Me By Your Name, Suspiria and The Big Splash, will direct a remake of Scarface, the classic crime drama that has been screened multiple times in Hollywood.

The first time – Howard Hawks and Richard Rosson in 1932, the second – Brian De Palma in 1983. The latter starred Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer.

The story of the transformation of the protagonist from a petty criminal into a major mafia this time will unfold in Los Angeles today. The script is being written by Joel and Ethan Coen, directors of such cult films as Fargo, No Country for Old Men, The Big Lebowski and Burn After Reading, but who will play in the new version is still unknown: previously for the main role Diego Luna was approved, but he left the project.

It is also too early to talk about the premiere date, because the coronavirus has confused all plans. We only hope that before heading into the criminal world, Luca Guadagnino still finishes work on the continuation of the story of Elio and Oliver.

Wes Anderson tells what to watch in quarantine

Now everyone is not too lazy to share lists of films, series, books, etc. for quarantine, but the most interesting thing is to learn about selections of cool directors. For example, Wes Anderson, who watches one movie every day in self-isolation.

List of a real movie buff! Perhaps there would be more recommendations if the director had the opportunity to watch films around the clock, but most of the time he is engaged in other things:

— the director told The New York Times about his self-isolation life.

In May, Wes Anderson was due to present his new film The French Dispatch at the Cannes Film Festival, which everyone was looking forward to: the first and last time the director was in Cannes with the film Moonlight Kingdom in 2012. Alas, the festival was canceled, and the world premiere of the film with Timothée Chalamet, Saoirse Ronan, Tilda Swinton, Lea Seydoux, Edward Norton and other stars was postponed from July 24 to October 16.

Teaser of the thriller "Whirlpool" starring Vladimir Vdovichenkov

The first teaser of the action-packed mini-series "Whirlpool" about mysterious murders and demons within us has appeared on the network.

In the city sewer, the police find the bodies of murdered teenagers whom no one has ever looked for. Taking on this case, the investigators come face to face with "unconditional evil – the whirlpool of the big city that sucks in and destroys the weak" – and with their old fears and unexperienced traumas.

The series was directed by Andrey Zagidullin (“Quest"), the screenwriter and author of the project idea is Andrey Stempkovsky (“Wake Me Up”), and the main roles are played by Vladimir Vdovichenkov, Vladislav Abashin, Aristarkh Venes, Yulia Melnikova and Alena Mikhailova.

The premiere will take place on June 27 at the KinoPoisk HD online cinema.
