Most Anticipated Premiere of the Year: Wonder Woman 1984

In early January last year, ticket service Fandango ranked the American superhero movie Wonder Woman 1984 as the number one most anticipated film of 2020 in the DC Extended Universe. Unfortunately, in 2020, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the premiere of this exciting fantasy adventure in most countries was postponed and never took place. Israeli actress and model Gal Gadot reprises her role in Wonder Woman 1984. Recall that her heroine is a wonder woman named Diana. She is an immortal Amazon with superhuman powers, born on the legendary island of Themyscira. Her mother – the leader of the Amazons named Hippolyta – fashioned her daughter from clay, and the god Zeus breathed life into her. Aunt Antiope (Robin Wright), being the general of the Amazons, brought up a real warrior from Diana.

In the first episode of Wonder Woman, Diana saves the world during World War II, having a decisive influence on its course. In the sequel to the same superhero fantasy, as the name implies, the events unfold in 1984, decades after the events of the first film. Diana now lives in Washington DC and works as a senior anthropologist at the Smithsonian Institution. In parallel, she anonymously fights crime in the metropolis.

The antagonists of the new episode of Wonder Woman are the greedy businessman Maxwell Lord and Diana’s new college colleague, Barbara Ann Minerva. The plot revolves around a mysterious wish stone. Unconsciously, Diana uses it to resurrect her lover from the first part – Captain Steve Tervor (Chris Pine). However, the desires of the rest of the film’s characters are not as harmless as Diana’s. Having gained access to the wishing stone, the antagonists plunge the world into chaos, and Wonder Woman will again have to save him.

What can you say about the viewing experience? Without unnecessary spoilers, we can talk about the incredibly spectacular beginning of the sequel, when we are shown the participation of a very young Diana in the Amazon competition, and the tense final battle of Wonder Woman with the main villains. Moreover, the fight with the cheetah woman, which Barbara turns into, looks too drawn, and the fight with Maxwell Lord comes down to a naive negotiation process. Unfortunately, the main part of the most anticipated premiere of the year is empty. And even the geography of Wonder Woman 1984 is not particularly extensive. In addition to America, along with the heroes of the film, the viewer will be lucky enough to visit only Cairo, which probably emphasizes the solidarity of the creators with restrictions on flights during the pandemic.

At the same time, only the spectacular outfits of the main character, some successful jokes and the tender romance of her relationship with her lover are pleasing to the eye. Not without the omnipresent tolerance in the new episode of Wonder Woman. So, at the beginning of Diana’s acquaintance with Barbara, we get a hint of their non-traditional sexual interest in each other. And then we find out that the son of a quite typical American, Maxwell Lord, has an accentuated Asian appearance.

In general, the rather long running time of the tape at 151 minutes does not seem to be drawn out and looks quite dynamic and easy. Excessive simplicity and straightforwardness of the plot, the absence of confusing narrative lines will make it understandable and attractive to an audience of 12+.

Be that as it may, the film had a promising start at the worldwide box office on December 25 last year. With a budget of $200 million, Wonder Woman 1984 had already paid for itself many times over by the time it opened. This once again confirms how much the viewer has been hungry for spectacular action during the quarantine.

The director of the tape, Patty Jenkins, has already announced reflections on the third episode of Wonder Woman, hinting at the same time that now the storyline will not rush into the past, but into the future.
