The President and Director of the Cannes Film Festival announced the participants of the 73rd Film Review

The organizers of the Cannes Film Festival were unable to hold it this year from May 12 to 23 due to the pandemic, but the festival work was not canceled. The selection committee considered a record number of entries (2,067 films!), selecting 56 films from them. Last night, their list was announced by the president of the Cannes Film Festival, Pierre Lescure, together with director Thierry Fremaux, in an empty cinema hall of the Palais des Festivals.

It was decided not to divide the program of the 73rd Cannes Film Festival into the usual sections (“Main Competition", “Un Certain Regard”, “Out of Competition”, “Special Sessions”), and the main goal of selecting participants was the desire to draw attention to films, many of which will be the first to be released when cinemas open after quarantine. Moreover, the films participating in Cannes 2020 will be marked with the monograms of the festival at the autumn and winter film screenings.

The organizers of the Cannes Film Festival noted that some films that the selection committee considered as undoubted participants in Cannes 2020 ended up not making the list, as the producers postponed their releases to next year. According to rumors, the new work of Kirill Serebrennikov "Petrovs in the flu" belongs to such films.

In his speech, Thierry Fremaux emphasized that 16 of the 56 selected paintings, which is almost a third, were created by women.

– he said.

He also noted the record number of debutants and the growing number of French films (this year there are 21 films on the list).
