During the interview, they are very interested in your resume, they say, you are suitable, and then they say in an apologetic and confidential tone that there is another candidate with somewhat more experience. As a rule, such competitions are arranged by firms that want to save on labor. They just throw out the job and then collect information from gullible job seekers. By agreeing to the competition, you will not only lose your monetary reward, but you will also not be able to keep the developed concept, because you have already presented it to the employer with your own hands. However, many companies hold contests. But that doesnāt mean itās a trap. Management just wants to find out for themselves your level and competence in a particular issue. As a rule, in such cases, they offer to perform a simple task. If it is voluminous and complex, then in this case it would be reasonable to say that it will take you some time to resolve the issue and you, of course, will get to work, but only as a full-time employee, or after the conclusion of an employment contract, or if a fee will be paid for the time spent. In general, companies that care about their reputation often agree to such conditions.
Situation 2. Free employee on probation
You are a young specialist who has just received a diploma. In this situation, it is very difficult to find a vacancy without work experience. In the end, you get a simple job, for example, a sales assistant in the department of household appliances, in order to somehow get by the first time. But during the work it turns out that several more applicants were hired for the same position and they said that only the one who will prove himself the best will get the job. You try your best, receive verbal encouragement, but no one is in a hurry to conclude an employment contract with you. As a result, at the end of the probationary period, you receive a denial of employment and a request to pay for the hours worked.

To protect yourself from the title of "shock bee", before you start work, ask to formulate and fix in writing all your responsibilities. It is also worth signing an employment contract. In this case, you will not only save yourself from free work, but also be able to calmly refuse a colleague if he decides to hang on you part of his work that you are not obliged to do.
However, a probationary period is not uncommon in companies, because in this way the organization finds out whether the selected candidate is suitable for them. But at the same time, decent companies act in accordance with all the rules of the Labor Code: they conclude an employment contract, which indicates a list of duties, the duration of the probationary period, and the level of wages. And keep in mind, the conclusion of the contract takes place regardless of whether there is a manual on site. Instead of them, there is always someone who is responsible for the company in their absence.
Situation 3. Freelancer
You work as a freelancer, for example, as a journalist, and during the interview you agree on a rather profitable cooperation, which you should start after a certain time. But then they call you, they talk about some kind of force majeure, due to which the work of the entire journal is slowed down, and they ask you to step in and write a few articles now, which you, succumbing to persuasion, do. Once you get a job, the employer doesnāt show up again, and in response to your calls, they tell you that the magazine has gone bankrupt, the release is delayed, or that your articles were not to your liking, therefore, there will be no money.
How to recognize a trick
For starters, itās worth saying that working at any remote and freelance job, you can be left without a fee. Especially if you first hand over your work, and only then receive money. A new employer may even ingratiate himself with you, and then, citing urgency and cooperation, force you to voluntarily help.

In this case, you will not be able to work on an advance payment, because many publishing houses pay based on the acceptance certificate or depending on the number of characters written by the author. But you can protect yourself if you sign in advance the authorās and labor contracts, which specify the amount of the fee, as well as the rights you are entitled to your work.
Before agreeing to the competitions offered by the employer, weigh the pros and cons and consider whether it is worth spending time on all this or it is better to direct your efforts to looking for another job.
